poet & literary translator

Something very unusual is going on here, with all this alliteration, this assonance, these echoings back and forth of pure sound.  And what it is a kind of very intense poetic play, a kind of game of stepping stones, and then of dance, a verbal dance which generates meanings in its movements, seems to generate them [the poems] before our very eyes. It is a play of consciousness that produces for us entirely unexpected, often rationally inexplicable meanings, one which takes us places we wouldn’t otherwise have dreamed we could go.—C.K. Williams
